Renal Angiomyolipoma ; Report of 10 Cases-

Abstract
Renal angiomyolipoma is a rare benign tumor. Its diagnosis had been difficult. Because its radiographic and clinical features are similar with renal cell carcinoma. But recently the ultrasonographic and computed tomographic images of renal
angiomyolipoma are sufficiently characteristic to permit accurate radiologic diagnosis. We had experienced 10 cases of renal angiomyolipoma for 10 years, from October, 1981 to August, 1990 and analyzed the radiographic, diagnostic methods,
symptoms,
ages, treatment, and follow up.
@ES The results are as follows :
@EN 1. Distribution of ages was 22 years to 66 years, average 46.8 years. Among them women were 8. 3 cases had bilateral angiomyolipoma of which 2 cases of them were associated with tuberous sclerosis and they were young women.
2. Diagnostic accuracies of ultrasonography and computed tomography were 77.8% and 88.9% respectively. It meant that computed tomography was superior to ultrasonography. But 2 cases were misdiagnosed preoperatively in spite of ultrasonography
and/or
computed tomography.
3. Chief complaints were flank pain in 5 cases, adenoma sebaceum in 2 cases, palpable mass in 1 cases but 2 cases were found incidentally. Majority of tumor size were over 10cm in diameter, but in 2 cases of being misdiagnosed for renal cell
carcinoma
were 5.5cm and 2.5cm, and in 2 cases of being found incidentally were less 2.5 cm in diameter.
4. The treatment for renal angiomyolipoma were nephrectomy in 4 cases, angioinfarction in 3 cases (unilateral angiomyolipoma in 1 case, bilateral one in 2 cases). 3 cases were recommended for follow up because of their small size and/or
symptomless.
5. 7 cases had no recurrence or change of the sizes during follow up. Size change and recurrence during follow up and 2 cases were lost to follow up , but 1 case who had been nephrectomized developed angiomyolipoma at contralateral kidney after
37
months.
